Forest Township is a Township in Northern Michigan encompassing 72 square miles. With lots of state land for mushroom hunting, elk, deer, bear, small game and turkey hunting, it's a sportsman's dream. Fishing in the Black River or Tower Pond is a favorite pastime.
Forest Township has an awesome Fire Department which is shared with Waverly Township. The Forest Waverly Fire Department is run with many dedicated volunteers. There is also two small grocery-party stores, a church, a motel, a gunsmith, a sawmill, a number of building contractors, an engraving studio, auto detailers, a taxidermist, wineries, and a Post Office for receiving mail. Moran Iron Works employs many talented welders from around the area, and Tom Moran is also starting a Trade School for Welding.
We have a large Community Hall that is available for many functions such as weddings, anniversary, fundraiser banquets and even birthday parties. A remodeled up-to-date kitchen and prep area makes food service a dream. With playgrounds, ball diamonds, and picnic and beach area to keep kids and young adults busy for hours, its a place to go. There is also an ice rink in the winter months.
The State Wide Bike Trail runs right through Tower and connects the trail between Cheboygan and Millersburg. There is a very nice bridge to cross on the trail in Tower. A rest/parking area near the bridge is planned for spring 2014.
According to the last tax roll, there are 985 Real Property, 29 Personal, 86 Exempt parcels, with a total of 1102 on the Tax Roll. Taxable Value on 987 parcels is 29,699,316.
According to the 2009 census, 1% of the residents living in the township were foreign born. 99% are native, including 83% who were born in Michigan. Total population was 909 residents. There are approximately 430 households in Forest Township. The average household size is 2.1 people.
At last census (2009), families made up 61% of the households in the Township. This figure includes both married couple families (42%) and other families (19%). Nonfamily households made up 39% of all households in the township. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder.
Forest Township is one of 19 Townships in Cheboygan County, along with 2 villages (Mackinaw and Wolverine) and the City of Cheboygan, which consists of 833 square miles. Total population for the county is 26,152 at the 2010 census.
